Bruce's history with keeping fish, frogs, and the like spans nearly 4 decades. He won his first goldfish at a carnival at age 9 but he was catching tadpoles with his dad and leopard frogs with his grandpa long before that. By Junior High, he was breeding cichlids for his local pet shop. By ninth grade, he was working at that same local pet shop and building custom aquariums in his school wood shop. His first tank, 135 gallons, took up most of his bedroom. The other eleven aquariums took up the rest.
In 1981, Bruce moved from the Denver area to Durango for college. He promptly became a familiar face and helping hand at “Liquid Assets”, the predecessor to The FISH CONNECTION. He dove head first into saltwater about this time, but maintained an interest in all aspects of the hobby. He also built a studio apartment over the top of the business and enjoyed “free” rent for several years. Actually, he worked full time at the shop in addition to his “other job” as a breakfast cook, but at least he never cut a rent check. In 1989, Bruce opened The FISH CONNECTION .
Bruce and Kathy have six wonderful children: Kara, Dyson, Jake, Zeke, Matthew, and Katrina. They have a 65 gallon Reef , a 29 gallon saltwater specimen, nine assorted freshwater aquariums, and a 2000 gallon Koi pond in their garden. Bruce's specialties: s.p.s. corals and “scale” water features for garden railroads.
